When Ingalls structural welder Thomas Ward struck his arc at the keel authentication for the future USS Thad Cochran (DDG 135), it was more than a ceremonial weld. It was a moment that joined craftsmanship, legacy and faith in one steady hand.
HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division successfully completed the second builder’s sea trials for guided missile destroyer Ted Stevens (DDG 128), building on the success of the initial trials conducted at the end of September. The Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) destroyer spent multiple days in the Gulf of America testing the ship’s main propulsion, combat systems and other critical systems in preparation for the future acceptance trials.
HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division authenticated the keel today of Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer Thad Cochran (DDG 135). The ship honors Thad Cochran, a Navy veteran and former U.S. senator who represented Mississippi from 1978 to 2018. Ceremony attendees included Cochran’s wife and ship sponsor Kay Bowen Webber Cochran and Ingalls shipbuilders.

HII hosted leaders from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) at the company’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division this month for a three-day engagement to advance joint goals of the memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies in April. During the visit, leaders from HII and HHI exchanged insights on shipbuilding technology and manufacturing processes, discussing both commercial and military shipbuilding opportunities.
The keel authentication of the future USS Thad Cochran (DDG 135) doesn’t just mark the start of a new ship. It honors a man whose work behind the scenes helped make many of the ships built at Ingalls possible – U.S. Senator Thad Cochran, one of Mississippi’s longest-serving lawmakers.
After a 37-year career as an Ingalls shipbuilder, George Nungesser, Vice President Program Management has announced his intent to retire in February 2026. As Vice President of Program Management, George and his team hold profit and loss responsibility for all elements of program execution and serve as principal liaison to the customer for all platforms across Ingalls’ portfolio. Additionally, under George’s leadership, the Program Management team is responsible for the capture of new business within existing product lines at Ingalls.
