2023 Shipbuilder Engagement Survey: Gallup FAQs

We are one week out from shipbuilders sharing their thoughts on engagement around the shipyard through the 2023 Gallup Shipbuilder Engagement Survey. Your responses add to our culture and enhance the Ingalls experience.

The survey will be open September 20 through October 6.

The survey is organized through Gallup. If you are new to the company, or you’ve never heard of Gallup, listed below are some frequently asked questions.

Who is Gallup?

Gallup is a third party consulting firm that specializes in asking questions through surveys and interpreting results. They started in the polling business in the 1940s and are well known for their administration of political polls. Today, their primary focus is helping companies improve employee engagement, or the emotional commitment people have to their work, coworkers, organizations and personal development that motivates higher levels of productivity.

Why should I trust them with my opinions?

Gallup has extensively researched the connection between employee engagement and positive business results and have discovered that there are certain things that employees, managers and a company can do to help employees feel more engaged. Their reputation is based on their integrity, so they will not share or publicize anyone’s personal information and have designed strong systems to keep your information secure.

Gallup uses our MyIDs to compile reports using strict standards that Ingalls uses to guide decision-making on issues that impact shipbuilders.

They never show us reports with less than five respondents.

They never share individual scores, even if we request.

Gallup takes confidentiality very seriously and has staked their reputation as a trusted organization on maintaining strict standards around privacy and confidentiality.

Confidentiality

Is the survey confidential?

YES. Confidentiality means that Gallup keeps the individual records associated with an individual survey confidential and DOES NOT SHARE INDIVIDUAL SURVEY RESULTS WITH ANYONE AT INGALLS OR HII.

Is the survey anonymous?

Technically, no, the survey is not anonymous. However, Ingalls never sees individual survey results.

 Why isn’t the survey anonymous?

An anonymous survey would not allow Gallup to create reports based on things like craft, shift, superintendent, ship, foreman etc.

If the survey were anonymous, management would get one single set of results for all 11,000+ shipbuilders at Ingalls and would not be able to compare differences in work groups and organizations, and make decisions based on different needs across the company.  This would not be very helpful because, as you know, situations can differ from crew to crew and from department to department.

Only Gallup is able to access individual surveys, but it is not anonymous. No one at Ingalls or HII ever sees what an individual puts on the Gallup Shipbuilder Engagement Survey.

Logistics

Will a charge number be provided to represented shipbuilders for taking the survey?

Yes, a charge number to cover travel time and time taking the survey will be provided.

What will new shipbuilders do?

New shipbuilders will be uploaded to Gallup while the survey remains open. There may be a lag of a day or two, but most new employees should be able to use their MyID to take the survey.

How long will the survey take to complete?

5-10 minutes.

When will represented employees take the survey?

Represented shipbuilders will be scheduled to take the survey in a lab or conference room on company-provided devices between Wednesday, September 20, 2023, and Friday, October 6, 2023.

When will non-represented shipbuilders take the survey?

Non-represented shipbuilders will receive an email from Gallup on or around September 20 inviting them to complete the survey by October 6 on their company-provided device. Reminders will be sent from Gallup until the survey is taken.

What if the shipbuilder does not read or understand English?

The survey is available in English, Latin American Spanish and Vietnamese.

One of the lab monitors can help guide survey takers to the appropriate language option.
