A moment of clarity after four years of college led to a life-changing decision for Willie Fairley, director, Construction Services and Completion.
Fairley was pursuing a Bachelor’s in Radiology and was beginning clinicals when he had a realization: he hated the smell of hospitals. Having been raised in a home with a father and grandfather who both provided for their families through their hard work and dedication to Ingalls Shipbuilding, Fairley made the decision to continue in their footsteps.
“I turned to what I knew best: Ingalls,” said Fairley. “I was raised in a home where every meal was because of my father’s hard work at Ingalls Shipbuilding. My grandfather also raised my dad off of the wages paid to him by Ingalls, so choosing to work in the shipyard was an easy decision to make.”
Fairley began his career at Ingalls in 2004 as a scaffold carpenter apprentice, finishing at the top of his apprentice class. From there, he worked his way up through the ranks from foreman carpenter to general foreman to superintendent. He would go on, eventually obtaining his current position as director for Manufacturing Services.
It’s a position Fairley said he could not have reached if not for the people around him.
“I attribute my growth in the company to having the willingness to learn and take constructive criticism from positive people who were willing to mentor me,” said Fairley. “I have had numerous great company leaders who have taken special interest in me and pushed me to be better day in and day out.”
It’s that kind of leadership that inspires Fairley to continue growing his career at Ingalls and helping other shipbuilders to do the same.
“My advice to shipbuilders seeking career growth at Ingalls is to always surround themselves with positive people who are willing to share their knowledge and wisdom to help you advance in the company,” he said.
