At Ingalls, we build ships as though our sons and daughters may one day sail on it—because they may. For shipfitter apprentice Monica McCann, they do. With two of her children currently serving on ships built by Ingalls shipbuilders, the saying is more than just a reminder - it’s the soundtrack to her life.
“I have a daughter that’s assigned to USS Green Bay (LPD 20), and a son assigned to USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG 123),” said Monica. “Even after my babies left home as adults, they’ve still found ways to remain my biggest inspiration in life.”
Although Monica is relatively new to the shipyard, our mission has always been a part of her story. When the opportunity to work for Ingalls came up, she knew this was where she was meant to be.
“The moment I walked through the gates, I thought to myself, I should have
been here a long time ago. Now that I'm here, I understand God put
me here for a reason, and I'm so grateful to be a part of this company.”
Monica shares her story with fellow shipbuilders in the hopes of inspiring them, as well. Her positive energy is reflected in the work that takes shape each day.
“I’m a cheerleader for all shipbuilders because I appreciate everyone coming together to get the job done,” said Monica. “This mentality makes me proud to be here.”
Not only do two of her children serve on Ingalls-built ships, but Monica also has a son in the Marines and a daughter showing interest in the Air Force. Her family’s commitment to our nation’s defense guides Monica every day to do what is right for the warfighter.
“My motivation will never change. I take pride in what we do because my kids are doing the same.”
