After serving in the Navy as an electronic warfare technician, Steve Cronk, designer, was determined to find another way to honor his country. He found his calling at Ingalls as a designer and remains inspired to assist those who travel similar paths as a sailor.
With a family history of military veterans, Steve pursued a career defending our freedom straight out of high school.
“I’ve always been fascinated with the military,” said Steve. “When my tenure was up, the next best thing for me was to start building ships for the Navy.”
Steve’s shipbuilding career started in the electrical department. His current role as a designer allows his Navy experience to shine.
“There are three things you need for a quality combat ship - capability, survivability and livability,” said Steve. “I know what it's like living on a ship and it really amazes me to see how advanced we’ve become with technology.”
Along with building quality ships, Steve shows up to work because of his great team. Together, they work through different design concepts to benefit the warfighter.
“Working new concepts from scratch with the electrical engineering team is fantastic,” said Steve. “Understanding different disciplines, meeting new people and thoroughly enjoying what I do keeps me going.”
For Steve, that sense of progress isn’t just technical. Steve tries to share his passion for shipbuilding with the younger generation as well.
“It’s a testament to the old saying that if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life,” said Steve. “Seeing our ships leave us brings a tear to my eye and it’s so cool to say we helped bring them to life.”
