“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This message was clear during the recent MLK panel event as shipbuilders discussed the power of service. Panelists like Damaris Casiano, sheetmetal mechanic, Operations; Alicia Davis, general foreman, Operations; and Adonis Simms, electrical apprentice, Operations; expressed how honoring Dr. King’s legacy means engaging in service that addresses community needs.
“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. emphasized that service is the path to greatness and true happiness,” said Jason Hinkel, cost estimating analyst, Contracts & Pricing. “In Dr. King’s words, always ask yourself ‘What are you doing for others?’, and these panelists were great voices to talk about service to other shipbuilders.”
Acts of service has meaningful impact that extends beyond the shipyard. Service may also be personal, echoing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call to uplift others through action.
“Service has a positive impact on me because it gives me a sense of happiness and fulfillment,” said Adonis. “It connects to Dr. King’s message because serving others keeps us grounded and reminds us of our purpose.”
Service shows up in the everyday moments of the shipyard. Shipbuilders shared how everyday actions rooted in compassion, commitment and collaboration creates change. Inspired by Dr. King’s call to do what is right, the conversation reminded us that all service efforts, big or small, can make a difference.
“As someone who works daily to connect shipbuilders to community resources and opportunities to serve, the MLK Service Panel left me feeling energized and ready to continue that mission,” said Mollie McCarroll, community relations representative, Integrated Communications & Stakeholder Engagement. “Our panelists showcased how impactful their commitment to serve in any capacity has been on their lives. This is exactly why I am dedicated to our continued work each day.”
