National Fire Prevention Week is a reminder that safety starts with each of us. At Ingalls, shipbuilders live that every day. Recently on LHA 8, one crew went the extra mile to do just that, making sure hot work could be done without the risk of fire.

Some of the LHA 8 team members were recognized for their commitment to safety, which ensured all areas of a nearby barge positioned adjacent to the ship were thoroughly cleaned and cleared of potential hazards.

Before beginning hot work on the starboard side of the ship, a proper hot work permit was obtained Shipbuilders then prepared the work area, removing all lines, combustibles, welding rods, ropes and any other flammable materials that could pose a risk.

Without hesitation, the team put safety first, taking the initiative to keep their work area and fellow shipbuilders safe. “As a firewatch, I am the first line of prevention when it comes to keeping my crew safe,” said Thomas Bracewell, shipfitter. The importance of maintaining adequate firewatches ensures all shipbuilders in the zone are going to make it home safely.

This level of diligence and commitment to safety is consistent for Marcus Chaney, welder.

“My role is simple: making sure the team around me has a safe working environment,” said Marcus. “I take the safety of myself and others very seriously.”

This recognition is a reminder that safety is a core value at Ingalls. It’s a shared responsibility and takes everyone being onboard to be successful.

“Taking pride in what you do was taught to me,” said Eric Wiggins, shipfitter. “I try to pass it on to others. Getting things done and done right is important.
