From hugging runners at the finish line as a child to co-chairing major events that uplift athletes with special needs, Jenni Jones, chief of staff, Hull, turned a lifelong passion into a powerful community impact. Through the Special Olympics, she’s seen resilience, joy and love in its purest form and she’s inviting others to experience it, too! We interviewed Jenni to remind people that you can make a difference through service.
How long have you been involved with the Special Olympics?
Since I was about 10 years old, I would attend events with my cousin Mark. As a child, I volunteered at the finish line as a “hugger” for the runners. At Ingalls, I became involved as a liaison when I was asked to join the board of the Ingalls 5K on the Causeway, which benefits Special Olympics Mississippi. I now serve as co-chair for the events. I am also the lead for the Olympic Village that Ingalls oversees during the annual summer games held at Keesler Air Force Base.
What roles and responsibilities do you have?
I had the honor of being appointed as a board member to the Special Olympics Mississippi (SOMS) representing Ingalls four years ago due to my involvement with prior events. The board plays the critical role of oversight for the organization.
What does it mean to you to give back to this cause and the community?
It means everything to me. Watching the direct result of our hard work during the Ingalls 5K brings much needed funds to this organization and the athletes is immeasurable. Some of the athletes would not be able to participate without the donations and funds raised. Just one smile from them and you know the impact of what you are doing in the community. Most recently, I was surprised with the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at a Biloxi Shuckers game on behalf of the SOMS board. This was definitely an exciting “bucket list” moment for me. It was so much fun, plus my pitch made it to the box so I was proud. It is a very special honor to represent Ingalls and the Special Olympics in this role.
Why do you enjoy it so much?
My love for the Special Olympics is engrained in my soul. Over the years, I have seen athletes overcome some of the most adverse situations and still come out a winner. The smiles and hugs are infectious. Every volunteer can tell you they are dedicated to these events.
How can others get involved?
Volunteer! I can personally promise you that if you take part in either the Ingalls 5K or the Olympic Village, you will walk away with a huge smile and a heart full of love. You will be hooked! We would love to have more shipbuilders take part in the event. Some of our athletes attend and participate. So not only are you helping raise funds, but you also get to see the faces of those who benefit from this program. It truly is a great service of love and I’m proud to have a role and volunteer with them.
