Building ships takes teamwork. Building a career takes connections. Understanding how those teams work together and connect with others beyond your own department makes you a stronger leader.
That's what LegacyBuilders was designed to do.
This mentoring program gives shipbuilders the opportunity to build relationships across the company, strengthen their leadership skills and gain a broader understanding of how every role contributes to delivering ships for the U.S. Navy.

Over the course of a year, participants explore different areas of the shipyard, learn from leaders and mentors, strengthen their leadership skills and take part in experiences beyond Ingalls that provide new perspectives.
For the Class of 2026, which will graduate in December, those experiences have included volunteer service projects and a visit to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans to reflect on the legacy of those who served before us.
For many participants, the relationships they build become one of the most valuable parts of the program.
"LegacyBuilders has shown me that building relationships across the shipyard isn't just valuable—it's essential," said Sara Tuite, Project Manager, Design Engineering.
For Sara, those connections have already made a difference in her day-to-day work.
"Having that broader network has already made a difference in my own job,” Sara continued. “I'm able to reach out to contacts in other departments for guidance, collaboration or clarification, which makes problem-solving faster and communication much smoother. It helps me see the bigger picture and understand how our work connects across the shipyard."
Mentors say those relationships help lay the foundation for long-term success.
"LegacyBuilders does a great job at exposing mentees to other sectors of the company and their day-to-day operations," said mentor Doug Butler, Pipe General Superintendent. "It's a great way for them to form a relationship with other shipbuilders and leaders outside of their dept. Those relationships create a strong foundation to help you become successful in your future career path."
For participants like design engineer Jay Thompson, the experience also opens the door to career opportunities many shipbuilders may not realize exist.
"As a shipbuilder on the deckplate, you may not be aware of the various positions and opportunities for growth that are available,” he said. “LegacyBuilders opened my eyes to the different roles that are essential to build these ships. If you are unsure about your career path, LegacyBuilders can help give you the guidance you are looking for."
