Recognizing the vital role mental health plays in a healthy and productive workplace, shipbuilder came together this week for our latest Professional Development Series session, “Leading with Awareness: Supporting Mental Health at Work,” featuring Patricia Gordon of the South Mississippi Mental Health Center.
“I believe mental health is important, especially with the professional and personal stress people deal with on a daily basis,” said Tameka Campbell, Shipfitter Foreman. “Mental health is something a lot of people don't talk about, but the discussion is needed and people shouldn't feel ashamed to ask for help or to talk to someone.”
Gordon highlighted the importance of early awareness when it comes to mental health. She discussed common red flags, how to support coworkers who need help and community resources available through both local mental health organizations and internal support programs such as HERO.
“I have been able to understand a deeper level of accountability, responsibility and control within myself,” said Domenique Brack, Scheduler, Central Planning. “What a wonderful feeling it is to be able to create the life that I want. When you allow yourself grace and acknowledge all the good things about yourself, you can truly do anything you want.”
The session closed with Ingalls making a financial contribution to the South Mississippi Mental Health Center.
