Shipbuilders working on Jeremiah Denton (DDG 129) have achieved Generator Light-Off, confirming key electrical and mechanical systems are functioning as designed.
This milestone marks the first successful operation of a ship service generator aboard DDG 129 under controlled testing conditions and establishes the foundation for future testing events.
“This validates years of planning, construction and preparation by our shipbuilders,” said Lauren Daniel, Ship Program Manager. “It demonstrates the quality of the work being done and gives us confidence as we move into the next phase of testing.”
Driven by Teamwork
Reaching this milestone took months of planning, installation and testing across multiple teams.
Before the generator could be energized, shipbuilders completed inspections, verified system configurations, flushed fuel systems and conducted final readiness checks to ensure the ship was prepared for safe operation.
Throughout the event, the Test & Trials team monitored generator performance and supporting systems to confirm safe and proper operation.
“Every craft executed its part of the process, and production and test teams worked hand-in-hand to achieve success,” said Jeff Davis, Ship Construction Manager. “When the generator came online, it marked another important step toward delivering a capable warship to the fleet.”
Teams also worked through system discrepancies and resolved issues quickly, keeping safety and quality at the forefront throughout the evolution.
Looking ahead
This milestone is an important steppingstone toward Main Engine Light-Off, dock trials and eventually sea trials.
“The success of this light-off demonstrates the value of thorough preparation, attention to detail and strong communication,” said Robert Webb, Test & Trials Superintendent. “This team is well positioned for the work ahead.”
In the weeks ahead, shipbuilders will continue system validation, equipment testing and integration activities as the ship moves into more complex testing events. Lessons learned here will carry forward into future milestones.
Way to go, shipbuilders!
