George M. Neal was a Navy air‑crewman whose courageous actions in the Korean War pioneered early rescue missions after he undertook a daring helicopter rescue while under enemy fire.
Neal was able to help save a downed Marine pilot before being shot down himself. After nine days evading capture, he became a POW until his release one year later. Awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism, Neal returned home to a life of service and humility.
The ship that carries his name will project those values across the globe, supported by the craftsmanship, dedication and pride of every Ingalls shipbuilder. We look forward to celebrating this proud moment with you and your family.
