What began as a high school introduction to the trades soon grew into a deeper calling for Sawyer Briggs. Through the apprenticeship program, he discovered a career path that felt right. His dedication ultimately earned him the title of Overall Apprentice of the Year. We interviewed Sawyer on the achievement that reflects purpose.
Q: You're this year’s Overall Apprentice of the Year. Let’s start with your journey. What led you to the apprenticeship program?
A: I started in the apprenticeship program after going through the high school program at Ocean Springs High School. They introduced me to what the program was all about and really got me interested.
Q: Talk to me about your experience. What have you learned throughout the program?
A: Overall, it was a good experience. You learn what you need to know out in the field, and in school the information they give you is solid. They really help set you up for the future.
Q: Were there any standout moments or meaningful lessons from instructors along the way?
A: In the beginning, most of the classes were strictly information-based. After a while they shifted to a more hands-on approach, and that change made a big difference. I think that was one of the best parts of the experience.
Q: What advice would you give someone who’s about to start the apprenticeship program?
A: Stick with it. It can feel overwhelming at first because you get a lot of information thrown at you, but if you push through, they’ll set you up to go far. It’s really not as hard as it seems once you get into it.
Q: Now that you’ve reached the end of the program and earned the Overall Apprentice of the Year title, what does that recognition mean to you?
A: It means a lot. It wasn’t necessarily something I was aiming for, but I know it’s the most prestigious award you can get in the program. So being chosen for it really does mean a lot to me.
