Shipbuilders aboard Bougainville (LHA 8) continue driving the vessel forward, achieving a significant milestone with the successful light-off of the final six generators. These generators provide the electricity that powers everything onboard.

“Think of it as turning on the engines of a massive floating city- these generators provide all the electricity needed to run everything on the ship,” said Mike Riggs, electrical test foreman. “It’s like a first drive in a new car, but on a much larger scale, confirming the heart of the ship’s electric plant is beating strong before we move to full sea trials.

This milestone is critical in a ship’s construction. From lights and navigation systems to life support and mission-ready equipment, testing the generators ensures the ship’s power is fully operational and performing at full strength.

“I feel fortunate to be a part of a superb group of shipbuilders who supported this major milestone,” said Nate Crocker, test engineer. “If the work that I do is not quality work, then I don't want to sell it to our customer. Our troops deserve the best, and I will do all I can to make sure they get the best.”

The successful generator light-off represents years of precise engineering and purposeful collaboration. For shipbuilders, this milestone marks years of preparation resulting in forward progress.

“Seeing those generators hum to life reminds me of the trust placed in us to deliver uncompromised quality,” said Mike. “These ships are lifelines for our sailors, enabling them to protect our way of life. Knowing my work contributes to their safety and mission success is profoundly rewarding and drives me to push for excellence every day.”
