Whether you grew up during the launch of MTV or the rise of social media, generational differences are only surface-level. The recent professional development series, Generation Collaboration: Bridging the Gap at Work, highlighted how shipbuilders are alike across age groups.

Holly Jackson, org. development, Human Resources & Administration (HR&A), and Julie Bryan, org. development, HR&A, unpacked what sets each generation apart, and how to leverage those differences to make everyone successful in the workplace.

“This was a great opportunity to learn and engage with my fellow shipbuilders in a fun and interactive way and I’m going to be able to take what I learned and apply it to my everyday duties,” said Anthony Le, scheduler, Planning. “I’d definitely recommend anyone interested in learning more about helpful workplace skills attend a Professional Development Lunch event.”

The session pointed out different motivating factors for generations, preferred communication styles and why their contributions matter to the shipyard.

“Despite our differences, we share more common ground than expected- such as financial stability, embracing technological advancements, maintaining work life balance, and valuing recognition for contributions,” said Ciara Clark, accountant, Finance. “My hope is that we continue to find common ground as we perform our day-to-day task and not let division distract us from fulfilling our mission.”

With five generations in the workplace, fostering connection, mutual respect, and teamwork is essential to the success of the shipyard.

“The event proved to be an engaging, positive, and collaborative experience,” said Ciara. “It offered hands on opportunities to explore the values and motivations our colleagues from different generations prioritize.”
