It is easy to become so busy that you forget to take time to connect with your team members. The Ingalls Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) team want to help you cultivate stronger relationships in the workplace. Start by asking yourself these questions:
-
When was the last time you asked someone at work how they were doing, and instead of just replying good, they shared something about themselves?
-
When was the last time you shared personal information with your team?
Relationships are becoming the leading contributor to workplace well-being, which is correlated with higher job satisfaction and engagement, as well as greater organizational and team commitment.
Here are three steps you can take to cultivate stronger relationships in the workplace:
-
Make time to connect with your team. When you have a moment, stop by a co-worker’s work station to check on them and see what’s new. You could even take lunch together every now and then as time permits.
-
Ask meaningful questions about employees' families, hobbies, and interests during these interactions. Do your best to remember their answers and follow up. Be transparent and genuine – it makes a difference.
-
Extend the relationship building to the broader team. Consider starting off team meetings with a quick round table where everyone shares a personal update or keeping up with your customers in supporting departments where it makes sense.
Remember that you and your team members are spending a significant portion of your lives together and working toward common goals. Investing time into these personal interactions can make a big impact, not only to another human’s life but to yours as well.
