From executive chef to pipefitter helper apprentice, Jamaican native Francois Roach is in the early stages of his career at Ingalls.

“I always try to go above and beyond what’s asked of me,” said Francois. “Being patient, paying attention and striving for excellence at all times have put me in a position to succeed.”

During his time in Jamaica, Francois graduated from high school and completed trade school for mechanical engineering and welding. He kept those skills in his back pocket while he continued to pursue a career in the food and service industry.

“I quickly became sous chef at a restaurant before upgrading to executive chef,” said Francois. “Then, COVID hit and restaurants were shut down. That’s when I decided to move to the U.S. and pick up my tools again.”

Francois worked construction jobs in New York before deciding to move to Mobile, Alabama. There, he noticed job openings at Ingalls and was hired on in February 2024 as a 7th class entry level pipefitter helper apprentice. Francois sets up job sites, ensuring that shipbuilders have the necessary materials for their tasks.

“From the start, Francois has shown a willingness to learn and has exceeded expectations,” said Shawn Migues, foreman, Pipe. “After 2 ½ weeks, I gave him his own job and he not only completed it independently, but did so correctly, delivering quality work.”

Francois’ work ethic will not only help him excel in his career but will also help him build a solid foundation for his family's future.

“I eventually want to move into a leadership role,” said Francois. “Hopefully, I can show my kids that dedication and perseverance paves the way to success and stability."
