Construction on Bougainville (LHA 8) is progressing following the achievement of the combat system light-off (CSLO) milestone
This milestone demonstrates that the large deck amphibious assault ship can now begin testing the combat systems that communicate and destroy threats.
“The team came together and drove this milestone to completion in order to start combat testing,” said Davianne Stokes, ship program manager. “I am really impressed with their drive and commitment.”
“Everyone had a purpose and we had a plan to meet our end goal,” said Adam McDowell, manager, CSLO program lead. “It was their individual commitments to the group that made this LHA team work.”
With a focus on electrical hook-ups, this milestone required strategic coordination and communication from shipbuilders in multiple crafts.
“Achieving CSLO allows us to start continuous combat testing,” continued Adam. “This is critical for our Navy counterparts in the mission of the ship. Not only did our craft personnel work together in achieving this critical milestone, the Navy supported the efforts and team and worked hand-in-hand with us on the deckplate.”
All of the primary spaces – 10 compartments in total – have now reached completion with the Navy. From here, LHA 8 will continue to progress through two additional CSLOs, fuel light-off, generator light-off and main engine light-off.
Bougainville is the first Flight 1 America-class ship and features numerous enhancements from prior LHA and LHD class ships to better support amphibious assault and aviation missions.
