Since 1991, Terry Baker’s consistency and dedication to the shipyard have elevated him in his position as a rigging general foreman.
“I love the fact that it’s a different adventure every day,” said Terry. “The same thing goes for our shipbuilders out here. We are all different, but we work together for the same goals.”
Terry is responsible for making sure his team’s bills are budgeted correctly. He’s also in charge of making sure foremen have what they need to do their daily routines.
“I know what it’s like to be in that position because I’ve been in their shoes before,” said Terry. “It’s important that my team has all of their materials so I try my best to set them up for success.”
Knowing how critical the work is that we do, Terry consistently motivates his team to deliver a world-class product.
“We are producing these vessels for those who defend our country,” said Terry. “Not only is that motivating, but it’s inspiring to come into work and strive for greatness.”
Terry knows the job of a rigger inside and out, but it's his ability to grow as a leader that keeps him dedicated to learning more.
"Every leader needs to have patience and understanding," said Terry. "It's important that I and others in leadership roles stay motivated and consistent. We set the tone for our teams and influence them to execute tasks in a timely manner."
With hard work and determination, shipbuilders have many pathways to help them develop and grow in their careers.
“It’s a great opportunity to learn persistence and appreciate the many pieces of the shipbuilding puzzle,” said Terry. “The best feeling is watching these vessels sail away, knowing we gave them the best product possible.”
