The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Ralph Johnson (DDG 114) sailed alongside the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) on June 11, 2024.
DDG 114, which was built at Ingalls, is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group Nine and is currently underway to conduct routine exercises in the U.S. Seventh Fleet area of operations. U.S. Seventh Fleet is the U.S. Navy’s largest forward-deployed numbered fleet, and routinely works with allies and partners in preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
As an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, USS Ralph Johnson's roles include anti-aircraft, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, as well as strike operations. USS Ralph Johnson is a Flight IIA ship and features ballistic missile defense, an embarked air wing and the inclusion of mine-detecting ability.
DDG 114 is named in honor of Marine Ralph H. Johnson, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for shielding two fellow Marines from a grenade in March 1968 during the Vietnam War. The ship was commissioned by the U.S. Navy in March 2018.
