Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro has announced the name of the future Flight III Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer to be built at Ingalls.

In a speech at the U.S. Naval Academy on May 22, Del Toro announced that DDG 143 will be named USS Richard J. Danzig.

Danzig served as the 71st secretary of the Navy. During that time, he developed and expanded the Navy College Program, the use of civilian teams to paint ships, and enhanced automation on ships, according to his Navy biography.

The Flight III destroyers are the first Navy combatants to be fitted with the AN/SPY-6 air and missile defense radar that will allow the destroyers to destroy threats from ballistic and traditional cruise missiles.

The first Flight III, USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125) was built at Ingalls and joined the fleet in October.

Pictured above is Ted Stevens (DDG 128), the second Flight III to be built at Ingalls, which was launched in 2023.
