Fleet Week New York kicked off last week with the much-anticipated Parade of Ships on the Hudson River. The parade featured eight military ships, including USS Bataan (LHD 5) and NSC 10 Calhoun (WMSL 759), which were both built at Ingalls.
Fleet Weeks are a tradition of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, where major U.S. cities host Marines, Sailors and Coast Guardsmen for one week of community-wide events. Fleet Week provides the opportunity for citizens to meet service members, tour naval ships and see firsthand the latest capabilities of today's maritime services.
This was the 36th year New York City has held Fleet Week, with nearly 3,000 servicemembers being honored during the week-long event.
Earlier this month, USS Bataan (LHD 5) was showcased at Fleet Week in Miami.
On its most recent deployment, USS Bataan transited the Suez Canal and operated in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations for more than four months, ensuring the free flow of navigation and regional stability. It also participated in Operation Prosperity Guardian in the Red Sea to deter further escalation and protect open sea lanes.
