Since 2018, the Supply Chain Management (SCM) Academy has offered free courses to shipbuilders, providing an opportunity to expand professional skills, learn about supply chain and explore open positions within the SCM department.
Open enrollment for SCM Academy is happening now through Aug. 4. The courses are open to all shipbuilders and will run Aug. 7 through Dec. 31.
The SCM Academy provides educational opportunities through blended learning including e-learning, classroom training, capstone projects, and seminars. There are four competency levels: Fundamental, Proficient, Advanced, and Mastery. Each level builds upon the previous, enhancing skills from a core foundation at the Fundamental Level to a comprehensive knowledge-base of competencies at the Mastery Level.
Complete courses on your own time at your own pace. Enrollment is free and mobile apps are available to take courses on the go! Please keep in mind, you must be in good standing with no active or pending disciplinary actions to be eligible. Successful completion of the SCM Academy does not guarantee promotion or any implied benefit.
The Supply Chain Management (SCM) Academy is a great resource to help shipbuilders enhance professional development.
“We wanted to have some sort of structure where every shipbuilder could go on a career path journey. They are able to select their job titles, then we match their abilities to meet that role and develop their skills,” explained Olivia Geiser, SCM Academy administrator.
The academy is structured like a university with four levels of classifications: fundamental, proficient, advanced and mastery. The classes are offered to all shipbuilders in the spring and fall with seminars during the summer.
“All you need is your manager's permission to sign up,” said Geiser. “You would meet with us and we would go over the different courses that fit you best.”
Having a healthcare and business background, subcontracts administrator Brittany Coberly jumped on the opportunity to sign up for the academy. Being new to the shipyard, she was excited to learn about how she could contribute to Ingalls’ mission and purpose.
“It was really interesting because I was able to take the classes and immediately apply it to my craft,” said Coberly. “As a buyer, it helped me in my role to negotiate better and use those techniques and apply them every day.”
Another benefit of the academy is shipbuilders can go through the program at their own pace.
“You can actually learn in different ways,” said Coberly. “There are options to watch videos online or to read books. It's nice to have that versatility in how you can learn and be able to apply it specifically to your role.”
The goal is to help shipbuilders advance in their careers by helping them discover new roles within Ingalls.
