Founded on Nov. 9, 1938 by Robert Ingersoll Ingalls Sr. (1882-1951), Ingalls originally opened on the East Bank of the Pascagoula River and started out building commercial ships. In the 1950s, Ingalls started bidding on Navy work, winning a contract in 1957 to build 12 nuclear-powered attack submarines. In 1968, the company expanded its facilities to the other side of the river, opening the West Bank facility.
Today, Ingalls has grown to become the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a major contributor to the economic growth of Alabama. Now employing more than 11,000 employees, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division is simultaneously building four classes of ships and has pioneered the development and production of technologically-advanced, highly capable ships for the surface Navy fleet.
Ingalls Shipbuilding has built a strong legacy building tomorrow’s fleet today.
