Goliath lands the 475-ton grand block 3140 onto Bougainville (LHA 8).

Bougainville (LHA 8) shipbuilders recently set in place grand block 3140, charting the course for outfitting of the ship’s forward main machinery and engine spaces.

The 475-ton grand block is the third of three full-breadth, three-deck-high grand blocks recently added to LHA 8. Shipbuilders accomplished the loadout of propulsion and electrical equipment and the addition of the grand block in less than a week.

"The craft and ship’s management team did an outstanding job accomplishing this complex loadout and erection in such a short time frame," said Steve Jones, LHA 8 construction manager. "This achievement is a testament to the team’s pre-planning efforts and attention to detail."

These grand blocks allow an additional level of completion for the areas of the ship prior to erect. Grand block 3140 also includes the covering units for the no. 1 main machinery room and will allow significant amounts of outfitting to begin in that space.
