The aft section of the forward superstructure is landed on Richard M. McCool Jr. (LPD 29).

A recent lift aboard Richard M. McCool Jr. (LPD 29) completed the ship’s forward superstructure and took her beyond 94% erection complete.

"Planning and hard work are allowing our team to make great strides on the McCool," said Josh Feltman, LPD 29 ship program manager. "A high level of pre-outfitting in the shops and alongside the ship ensures faster completion of spaces after we set grand blocks in place."

Soon after the lift, shipbuilders joined the 350-ton aft section with the rest of the superstructure, a 744-ton megablock landed earlier this year.

In advance of the lift, riggers loaded equipment into spaces within the forward superstructure and other lockout areas including electronic and galley equipment.

Shipbuilders also built and installed the ship’s intake and uptake before the lift. They are now connecting other essential systems that run throughout the ship.

"Our efforts improving first-time quality and schedule will make waves when this ship goes to sea," said Hank Corcoran, LPD 29 construction manager.
