The 210-ton grand block 2310 is landed on Calhoun’s build cradle Friday, Jan. 22.

Process improvements are starting Ingalls’ tenth National Security Cutter, Calhoun (WMSL 759), on a strong foundation.

“Before moving to the cradle, Paint department completely painted all tanks and bilges on grand block 2310,” said Will Rooks, NSC 10 ship program manager. “This new process will result in improved quality and cost efficiencies of the paint system.”

Bruce Knowles, director, Stacking and Outfitting, said before painting could begin, all major hot work was completed, including propulsion foundations and significant pipe, electrical and material outfitting.

Machinery also cut the reduction gear liners to exact tolerances so the gears can be landed soon.

“Overall, getting this grand block to Paint prior to the end of the year was an excellent collaborative effort,” Knowles said. “All personnel that touched any part of this accomplishment should be extremely proud – job well done by all.”

Donald Byrd, foreman, Grind and Test, said, “This just goes to show that Ingalls has some incredible employees, who together can accomplish feats that seem insurmountable.”
