The Big Picture: Color-coded containers are scattered across the shipyard to keep our workspace clean, safe and efficient, but they only work if we use them correctly.
Make sure you are disposing your waste in the correct container
Why It Matters: Throwing the wrong materials in the wrong bins isn’t just a hassle — it's dangerous.
- Misplaced waste creates fire hazards, delays disposal and puts resource recovery staff at risk
Know The Colors: Waste should be discarded into the appropriate color-coded bin:
- Black = Scrap metal
- Blue = Food waste
- Gray = Recycled paper
- Green = Trash
- Purple = Paint
What They’re Saying:
- Cherrie Kimbrough, Manufacturing Analyst: “When people throw wood or trash in a scrap container, it’s a fire hazard. It puts Resource Recovery team members and other shipbuilders at risk. We all have the same goal to build quality ships and make sure everyone goes home in one piece at the end of the day.”
Important Reminders:
- Don’t block roll-off access with vehicles or forklifts
- Stay alert around trucks, especially when they are backing up
- Call the number posted on the bin if you are unsure about which container to use
