THE BIG PICTURE:

  • The Ingalls-built, Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Gravely (DDG 107) departed Naval Weapons Station Yorktown on March 15 for a scheduled deployment to the U.S. Northern Command Area of Responsibility (USNORTHCOM AOR).
  • This mission will support the southern border security effort and broader national defense priorities.

BECAUSE OF YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS:

  • In collaboration with U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachments, DDG 107 will enhance U.S. territorial integrity and sovereignty through maritime security operations.
  • It is part of a larger coordinated effort to address security challenges in U.S. waters and international maritime zones.

HOW IT RELATES TO YOU:

  • DDG 107, a Flight IIA Aegis guided missile destroyer, was the 27th destroyer built at Ingalls.
  • The ship's keel was laid in 2007, and it was christened in 2009.
  • The ship is named after Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., the first African American in the U.S. Navy to serve aboard a fighting ship as an officer, the first to command a Navy ship, the first fleet commander, and the first to become a flag officer, retiring as a vice admiral.
