The Big Picture:

Bougainville (LHA 8) has completed installation of two Aircraft Maintenance Bridge Cranes (AMBC) in the Hangar Bay, a critical step for supporting aircraft maintenance while at sea.

Why It Matters:

  • The cranes, weighing 24,000 pounds and 41,000 pounds each, provide essential support for Aviation Machinist Mates (ADs) to maintain aircraft during missions.
  • The precise and complex installation required extensive collaboration across multiple teams to ensure no damage to the ship or equipment.

What They’re Saying:

Joey Langford, LHA 8 Ship Design Management: “Installing the bridge crane was one of the tasks where doing the hard things right came into play. From the beginning we knew that this task would be challenging, with some of the estimated clearances only being 5/8” of an inch.  By using teamwork, technology, planning and good communication, we were able to pull off a task that some thought was impossible.”

What's Next:

  • With the cranes now in place, Bougainville is fully equipped for aircraft maintenance during deployment.
  • This milestone marks a significant step toward readiness as the ship progresses toward its commissioning and operational deployment.

About the Ship:

  • Bougainville (LHA 8), the third America-class amphibious assault ship, is designed for high-density, multi-threat environments and global operations. It will transport Marines, equipment, and supplies with efficiency.
  • The ship is named after Bougainville Island, honoring the World War II campaign that played a pivotal role in the Pacific.
