In today's fast-paced work environment, time efficiency is crucial for keeping operations running smoothly. To enhance timekeeping and reduce time kiosk wait lines, the Information Technology (IT) team launched the START app, allowing shipbuilders to enter their time with assistance from their foreman. The START app, available to foremen on their company-issued work phones, provides a tool to help crews with timekeeping.
“We wanted to make things simpler and more efficient for our shipbuilders,” said Alan Hinton, end user support specialist. “Working on the deckplate is hard enough, so if we can do anything to make things better and easier that is our goal.”
Shannon Hoffman, administrative functional support, Operations, said “This new process will prevent shipbuilders from having to wait in long lines at the kiosks and taking time away from the job. Foremen can assist shipbuilders and ensure everyone has their time in before starting their job for the day.”
Different departments worked together to make the app a success, with foremen and their crews helping test it before launch. App training was provided to all foremen.
“The app has helped foremen by being able to make sure time is input in a timely manner, and it has helped with more one-on-one time with each shipbuilder,” said Jacob Wasden, foreman, Shipfitting.
Erinn Padgett, foreman, Pipe, said, “This app helps get our crews to work faster and eliminates time spent off the job. The app not only speeds up the timekeeping process but also provides an opportunity for engagement. ”
James Farley, foreman, Shipfitting, said, “I can complete Take Fives and other checkpoints with my crew in a timely manner. Before the app, shipbuilders could still be waiting to log their times, which delays them from getting their tools, equipment and foreman approval.”
Shipbuilders who produced the START app have a sense of pride knowing they are contributing to the bigger picture of the shipyard.
“It’s very rewarding for me to have been involved in a project that provides efficiencies to the shipbuilders,” said Katlyn Hudson, administrative functional support, Operations. “The more we can streamline some aspects of their job, the more successful we become as a team to provide the finished products and meet our commitments.”
“I’m honored to have a part in developing systems and apps and collaborating with our great foremen,” said Cheryl Morrison, manager, Operations Admin. “Listening and incorporating their great ideas is a win-win for all in order to build these great ships.”
