Civility is essential to our commitment to a Zero Compromise environment. It embodies our core values and shapes how we collaborate effectively and support one another. When workplace conflicts or tensions arise, it is each of our responsibility to uphold ethical behavior and show respect, communicating openly and thoughtfully with one another.

Addressing conflicts promptly helps strengthen the team and refocus our efforts on shared goals. Below are strategies for de-escalating workplace conflicts to maintain a positive and productive shipyard.

Do:

  • Keep emotions in check by taking deep breaths and speaking calmly

  • Maintain personal space

  • Listen attentively without interrupting, use cues to show understanding of issue

  • Focus on the issue, stick to the facts, and work together on solutions to foster teamwork and reduce hostility

  • If emotions run high, suggest a break or involve a neutral third party, such as a supervisor or HR representative

 Don’t:

  • Let emotions take over by reacting impulsively and speaking in an agitated tone

  • Invade someone’s personal space

  • Interrupt, ignore their words, and dismiss the issue

  • Shift away from the issue, ignore facts, and avoid collaboration

  • Allow the conflict to persist without involving a neutral third-party when needed

If a situation becomes hostile or violates the Code of Ethics and Business conduct, report the violation right away.
