The Ingalls-built Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Dewey (DDG 105), pictured above, fires a Mark 45 5-inch light-weight gun during a live-fire weapons exercise on November 2. The ship was operating in the Andaman Sea as part of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Malaysia.

The U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Royal Malaysian Armed Forces commenced Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Malaysia 2024 on October 29. This marked the beginning of eight days of maritime engagements designed to enhance interoperability and strengthen security ties between the two nations.

CARAT Malaysia 2024 is a biennial exercise that seeks to enhance collaboration focused on shared maritime security challenges in the region. In its 30th year, CARAT 2024 highlights the longstanding role of regular collaboration as a credible venue for regional allies and partners to address shared maritime security priorities.

CARAT Malaysia 2024 builds on 67 years of close collaboration between the U.S. and Malaysia. It highlights our continued dedication to peace, stability and security in the region. Additionally, CARAT Malaysia serves as a symbol of the U.S. commitment to key Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) partners to reinforce ASEAN Centrality, supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific.

USS Dewey is named after Admiral George Dewey, the only person to ever be appointed “Admiral of the Navy,” was famous for his efforts at the Battle of Manila Bay, in which he decimated the antiquated Spanish fleet while losing only one life. USS Dewey is the fourth ship to be named after Admiral Dewey and was delivered to the Navy by Ingalls in 2009.
