Forward Ambitions is about supporting influential shipbuilders who are integral to our past, vital to our present and critical to our future. The foreman position is a chance for shipbuilders to grow and showcase their skills in a leadership role. Shipbuilders learned more about opportunities available for foremen at the inaugural Forward Ambitions event.

“We are thrilled to expose unsung heroes of the deckplate to leadership roles,” said Marla Cooper, manager, Organizational Development. “There comes a time in someone’s life and career when they think about contributing in a different way and not only building great ships but building great shipbuilders.”

Foremen from various crafts shared their own journey and knowledge on the position, giving a firsthand account of their own experiences. The testimonials encouraged shipbuilders to pursue the foreman role and get excited about elevating their careers.

“I’m fueled by the distinction of being a shipbuilder; it’s not just a job but a privilege,” said Jerome Dedeaux, general foreman, Carpentry. “We have the pleasure to contribute to ships that serve as guardians of our nation.”

This session informed shipbuilders about what it takes to become a foreman. Participants were able to ask questions and learn about the skills, expectations and behaviors needed for the job, as well as get information on compensation and the application process.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation for everyone’s efforts in executing a successful event,” said Mark Craig, data analyst, EEO & Diversity. “Most importantly, I commend all those who attended the event, recognizing their pivotal role as future leaders within the shipyard.”

While this event does not promise anyone a guaranteed foreman position, it does give shipbuilders the ability to learn about the many growth opportunities available at Ingalls through shipbuilder engagement and career counseling.

“My mentors kept pushing me to be more of a leader and step out of my comfort zone,” said John Allman, foreman, Welding. “And then it clicked: this is my opportunity to be the foreman I’ve always wanted when I was a crew member. It’s up to me to change the culture.”
