As stated in our Code of Ethics and Business Conduct, civility is an expectation of all HII employees. Civil behavior reflects mutual respect and concern for others, which is one of the most fundamental components of an ethical culture. It means that you treat others with dignity and respect, and you communicate in a courteous and professional manner. By exhibiting civility at all times, you are putting our value of Respect into practice.

The key to civility is mastering how the people around you want to be treated.

A way to master civility is practicing the Platinum Rule, which is just one step further from The Golden Rule, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” The Golden Rule assumes others want to be treated like we do; however, the Platinum Rule ensures understanding and respect of others’ unique preferences while fostering better relationships and teamwork.

Treating others with Dignity and Respect requires communication. What you may believe to be effective communication could be perceived differently based on one’s culture, background and upbringing. Remember, you may need to adjust your communication based on differences in learning styles, social preferences, work environments, etc. Therefore, the Golden Rule will not get you far when working 24/7/365 with others.

When thinking of civility, also think of the Platinum Rule. In doing so, one is able to keep in mind that in order to be civil with others, you must meet people where they are. The Platinum Rule requires one to be more intentional when building professional relationships.  In return, YOU are creating a civil workplace where others feel valued and respected.
