The Ingalls-built amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) is working alongside allied and partner maritime forces, focusing on promoting regional stability and demonstrating the strong maritime partnerships between the U.S. and our allies.
Built at Ingalls and commissioned in 1989, LHD 1 is the lead ship of the Wasp-class and the 10th U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name since 1775.
LHD 1 recently transited through the Strait of Gibraltar on June 26, 2024. Flying patrol alongside LHA 1 was an AH-1Z Viper assigned to the “Blue Knights” of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron.
USS Wasp is conducting operations in the U.S. Naval Forces Europe area of operations as the flagship of the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), which operates as part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC).
