Warships from the U.S. Navy, Australia Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force recently conducted two days of training in the Indian Ocean. The Ingalls-built USS Halsey (DDG 97), along with Australia’s HMAS Warramunga (II) and Japan’s JS Sazanami, sailed from Singapore to India for Exercise Milan 2024.
The three ships steamed in formation and practiced tactical maneuvering, coordinated helicopter flying operations, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, and conducted a combined five-inch gun firing.
Five personnel from both Halsey and Warramunga ‘cross decked’ during the exercise to experience life in their ally’s ship while providing an opportunity to build relationships.
Called Noble Dingo, the exercise was designed to enhance the three navies’ ability to operate together and was part of the IndoPacific regional presence deployment Warramunga has been undertaking throughout South and Southeast Asia.
USS Halsey (DDG 97) was christened at Ingalls in 2004 and honors Fleet Adm. William Frederick "Bull" Halsey Jr., a World War I and World War II Naval hero.
