Shipbuilders volunteered their time, knowledge and passion at Science Saturday, an event hosted by Walter Anderson Museum of Art (WAMA) in Ocean Springs. Designed to inspire future innovators, the event offered a full day of hands-on learning, blending science, technology, engineering, art and math in fun and accessible ways for all ages.

“It’s always fascinating to see how kids think. Building boats out of cups, popsicle sticks and rubber bands was a fun way for them to explore buoyancy and propulsion,” said Logan Killen, manager, Engineering. “Some kids picked up on the STEAM concepts right away and some started building their own designs to see if they could get their boat to go faster. It was a blast and I’m looking forward to volunteering again!”

Shipbuilders turned concepts into real-world experiences that left a lasting impression on future innovators in STEAM fields. Science Saturday encouraged learning, creativity and community-driven education.

“Ingalls demonstrated center of mass, potential and kinetic energy by building boats,” said Paulina Phillips, mechanical engineer. “It was a beautiful celebration of science education and workforce development.”
