A Message from Mike Petters: Upcoming Engagement Survey

Published on 09/03/2020

Dear HII Employees:

The period in which HII employees can participate in the company’s annual engagement survey is approaching in the coming weeks. The survey administered by Gallup gives employees across the company — nearly 42,000 of you all across the United States and around the world — an opportunity to have your voices heard and to gauge how HII is performing in terms of engagement.

The all-hands survey is HII’s primary tool to record how the company is doing when it comes to increasing engagement, which is one of HII’s Company Values. It is especially important to record our engagement efforts this year as the company responds to the COVID-19 pandemic in myriad ways, including but not limited to social distancing, benefits changes to allow for flexibility, on-site cleaning efforts to minimize risk, and increased use of remote working.

The survey takes only a few minutes to complete, and in previous years it has included 12 questions. This year, we have added two new questions, one of which relates to being treated with civility and the other about whether you are being kept informed by your supervisor. Your individual responses are 100% confidential, and we always share the compiled results so they can be used for team discussions and action-planning.

As with previous years, the post-survey activities remain the most important part of the process because they help each of you take ownership of your work and work processes. At the enterprise level, the results help management teams create an inclusive and highly collaborative culture where we all care about and encourage each other’s success. Those changes only happen after work teams discuss the survey results, set goals and plan new actions that will enable us to perform better.

Building engagement across HII means ensuring that every employee, particularly the least empowered employees, are encouraged to and empowered to speak up and share their views, and that their input is valued. I strongly believe that increasing engagement — even in the new normal environment that we’re all working in — is our greatest opportunity for creating more value in our company and transforming our business for the future.

Thank you in advance for participating in this year’s engagement survey and for your commitment to building an inclusive, collaborative and transformative culture at HII.
