Editor's Note: This story has been updated to reflect the passing of longtime shipbuilder Cynthia Griffin, who died on September 11, 2023.

Watching the sun reflect off the finish of a ship as it sails away from Ingalls was a source of great pride for Cynthia Griffin, general superintendent, Paint.

From the very beginning of her time as a shipbuilder in the apprenticeship program, Griffin showed strong leadership characteristics, graduating at the top of her class as Apprentice of the Year.

After working as a first-class painter, she sought positions of leadership and went on to work as an outside surveyor, paint planner, foreman, general foreman and superintendent.

“I take each job or position to be a learning and growing experience,” said Griffin. “With the diverse workforce we have, there’s always opportunity to learn and grow.”

Since the start of her shipbuilding career, Griffin surrounded herself with shipbuilders who inspired her and leaders who encouraged her.

“This has been more than just a job for me,” she said. “When I started, I was looking for job security. What I found was job security and people who have looked out for me and supported me throughout my career. If I had a do-over, I would still choose this company and the co-workers who have crossed my path.”

In addition to safety and quality, maintaining a strong sense of pride in her work was of the utmost importance throughout her journey.

“When you see a ship going down the channel in the pre-dawn sunrise and you see how good it looks, it really fills your heart with pride,” said Griffin.

She always encouraged others to dedicate themselves to their crafts and foster that same sense of appreciation for the work they do.

“Be ethical and take pride in whatever trade you choose and always give first-time quality,” said Griffin. “I hope I will be remembered for the pride I took in representing our company.”
