Growing up around the Navy, working on ships was a natural choice for general ship superintendent Lars Rundberg.

Rundberg first came to Ingalls in 2003 after previously having been a student doing graduate research on the ship design of DD(X). Establishing his career at Ingalls was an opportunity to continue his work in naval design and construction.

Since becoming an Ingalls employee, Rundberg has worked on several ship systems, beginning as a life cycle support engineer and advancing to project manager. He would continue work in several capacities, including superintendent roles on multiple ships and as a marine technical cognizant engineer.

For Rundberg, working at Ingalls has been a way to fulfill his patriotic duty and serve his country.

“It’s about taking a good look at what we do and asking how we give back to the country that gives us all the freedoms we enjoy. How do we make sure the product that we deliver to the Navy is the safest for our sailors and best fulfills the Navy’s mission?” said Rundberg. “We try to do that every day on the deckplate by staying safe and performing to specifications. We strive to make sure we can get the taxpayer a good quality system at a good cost and get it to the fleet on time.”

Leaning on and learning from other shipbuilders has helped Rundberg in each job he’s held at Ingalls. Now, he encourages new shipbuilders to do the same as they map out their own career paths.

“Take a step out of your comfort zone. Learn something that somebody else does well and how you can bring that into what you do,” he said. “Everybody in the shipyard is important, regardless of their background. The point of view they offer, the experience they can share, we can use that. Take the best of all that knowledge and condense it into what you do every day.”
