Vanessa Candelario began her career as a boat clerk at Ingalls in 2008. Nearly two decades later, she’s now a project manager—and the mission continues with her children and husband also supporting the warfighter.
“Everyone told me Ingalls was the place to work when I moved to Mississippi,” said Vanessa. “I started off as a boat clerk, fire watched for a while, worked in the store rooms, handled inventory control, and now I’m in project management.”
In her role, Vanessa supports her team in the Engineering department as they complete their tasks according to schedule.
“I understand our processes and how each department works together to get the job done,” said Vanessa. “It’s meaningful knowing what I do has a bigger purpose.”
With her husband, daughter and stepdaughter all building their careers at Ingalls, Vanessa watched her family grow alongside the shipyard. Seeing each of them find their place and contribute to the mission strengthened her connection to the work.
“We jokingly call Ingalls the family business, but this company has truly taken care of us,” said Vanessa. “We’ve put four kids through college because of Ingalls, so watching it become a full circle moment is a blessing.”
Vanessa approaches each day knowing every task ultimately supports the warfighter. Her commitment to staying positive and continually growing helps ensure the vessels are ready for those who depend on them.
“Eighteen years ago, I was the new girl that came to the yard. I never thought that I would end up in this position,” said Vanessa. “Moments like this make you realize you are more than a just a badge number. You’re making a difference for our nation’s defense.”
