With a family history in both the military and the shipyard, Lorenzo Fuller was destined to help protect our freedom in some shape or form. Using his military background, Lorenzo’s experience comes in handy in his role as ship superintendent of the future USS Jeremiah Denton (DDG 129)

Lorenzo’s father laid out a clear blueprint for what a career at Ingalls looks like after serving in the Armed Forces. From there, his entire household eventually made their way to the shipyard.

“My father, two brothers, sister and even my wife all worked out here at some point,” said Lorenzo. My son is out here, as well, so the shipyard means a lot to the Fuller family.

After eight years in the Marine Corps, Lorenzo came in as an apprentice in the Paint department. From there, he was selected for the co-op program and received a degree in industrial engineering. Lorenzo progressed his career, gaining experience in various positions at Ingalls, such as carpenter and boat foreman, which helped set the stage for the next step in his career

“I’m driven to build ships that help protect our country’s freedom,” said Lorenzo. “When we hand them over to the Navy, I want every Sailor to know they’re getting the best because their safety depends on it.”

Lorenzo mitigates obstacles on the ship so craft can be successful. His experience in the Marines supports his responsibilities in the shipyard

“One of my biggest motivations is being able to teach others,” said Lorenzo. “Knowing what it’s like to be in harm’s way, I truly understand how critical it is to have the right tools and training to support the mission.”

For Lorenzo, the connection between family, service and craftsmanship runs deep. Every ship built is a tribute to the values instilled in him and the generations before.

“It’s an awesome feeling to come here and work on military ships,” said Lorenzo. “I’m a part of something bigger than myself — and that’s what motivates me to show up and do a job I can be proud of.”
