Across three community events, shipbuilders demonstrated the spirit of service, togetherness and community pride during a meaningful weekend of volunteerism.
Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk
Ingalls volunteers joined families, advocates and local partners for the Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk. Led by VERT (Veterans Employee Resource Team), shipbuilders showed meaningful support for mental health awareness.
"It was nice being out there and being a part of something that has effected so many people and so many lives,” said Mario Peques, structural welder. “I enjoyed doing something positive and giving my time to make a small impact."
Science Saturday at WAMA
In Ocean Springs, CODE (Connecting Organizations, Developing Engineers) spent the afternoon inspiring young learners during Science Saturday at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art. Shipbuilders guided hands-on STEM activities, encouraging future innovators across Mississippi.
"Getting to help kids build boats, test their designs and see their creativity spark was the best part,” said Chase LaRue, engineer. “It was great to represent Ingalls and show how a small hands‑on activity can inspire curiosity about engineering."
Festival Hispano de Pascagoula
As an effort to recruit future shipbuilders, Ingalls had a presence at the Hispanic Festival in Pascagoula. The community enjoyed together music, food, performances and family-friendly activities—offering a joyful day of connection along the Pascagoula waterfront.
"This awesome event had good food, great music and some amazing people!” said Marcus Steele, painter. “It was a privilege to be able to serve and connect with the community alongside my fellow shipbuilders."
