This year’s Ingalls 5K Special Olympics Ambassador is 56‑year‑old Angelia Williams, sister of paint foreman Alicia Barren. Angelia was born with Down Syndrome, but her life has been defined far more by courage and joy than her diagnosis.

“My mother was told Angelia would never walk or talk,” said Alicia. “But she walks, she talks, and even though she is verbally challenged, she still knows how to make an impact in the world.

Angelia grew up in supportive family that watched her meet every challenge with determination. A proud graduate of the Jackson County Exceptional School in Pascagoula, Angelia spent her life bringing joy to those around her. Her favorite color, bright yellow, perfectly matches the warmth she brings into any room.

She never meets a stranger,” said Alicia. “She is known everywhere for her warm hugs, affectionate spirit and beautiful smile.”

Being selected as the 2026 Ingalls 5K Ambassador holds a deeper meaning for Angelia’s family. Her mother Virginia Williams, who has been her daily caregiver throughout her life, was an Ingalls shipbuilder in the 1970s. The connection makes this honor even more meaningful.

“This is a special and profound honor for our family,” Alicia said. “To be recognized in this celebration shows us that her joyful spirit continues to touch many lives. No matter what their challenges are, their lives still touch one’s heart and through God, all things are possible.”
