Since walking through the gates of the shipyard, Vivian Nguyen has been determined to grow as a welder and earn a leadership role. She joined Ingalls as an entry-level pipe welder in June 2023. Less than a year later, her hard work and dedication helped her reach first-class just one year after hiring on.
Raised in a large family of eight, Vivian understands the value of hard work and the financial stability a career in shipbuilding can provide. Her passion for welding was ignited during a field trip to Ingalls while she was still a senior at St. Martin High School.
“Looking at the environment and understanding the importance of the job, I knew right away this is exactly where I needed to be,” Vivian recalls.
From day one, Vivian has been determined not only to excel as a welder but also to eventually take on a leadership role at Ingalls. Management has taken notice of Vivian’s exceptional work ethic and believe her leadership dreams are well within reach.
“I am very impressed with Vivian’s diligence and drive,” said Steven Parker, Pipe foreman. “She shows great initiative and passion for what we do. I see her work ethic taking her to the places she wants to go in her career.”
Vivian loves being an Ingalls shipbuilder because it gives her the same sense of accomplishment she experiences when restoring vintage cars and motorcycles — transforming something from the ground up with skill and creativity.
“Making something out of nothing never fails to amaze me about the shipyard,” said Vivian. "Every weld tells a story of transformation, reminding me that we can turn raw materials into something extraordinary."
