May we always remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
Shortly after the events of 9/11, Ingalls shipbuilders crafted three San Antonio-class warships—USS New York (LPD 21), USS Arlington (LPD 24) and USS Somerset (LPD 25) — which were named to honor the cities and the nearly 3,000 victims killed on that tragic day. Each one of these ships carries their memory.
USS New York (LPD 21), built at Avondale, features 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center in its bow stem. It’s currently deployed with the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group in Europe and Africa.
USS Arlington (LPD 24), built at Ingalls in Pascagoula, displays steel from the Pentagon in a tribute room aboard, honoring the 184 lives lost there. It is homeported in Norfolk, Va., and serves with the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group.
USS Somerset (LPD 25), which was built at Avondale, commemorates the 40 passengers and crew of Flight 93. Its keel includes steel from the crash site, and the ship features a memorial room dedicated to the victims. It recently returned to San Diego after a deployment to the Indo-Pacific region.
Ingalls is proud to have contributed to preserving the memory of those lost on 9/11 and to support our Armed Forces through the ships we build.
