After serving six years in the Marine Corps, Olivia Bosarge was trying to figure out the next chapter of her life. Inspired by her father’s career in the shipyard, she would follow in his footsteps by signing up for the pipefitting apprenticeship program.

“I tried college, but it wasn’t for me,” said Olivia. “My dad made good money out here, so I decided to do the next best thing and become a second-generation pipefitter.”

After graduating from the program in 2021, Olivia made her way into the yard before quickly becoming a Pipe test foreman. She’s responsible for ensuring all piping systems aboard the ship are complete and ready to go into operation. Because of the skills she learned through the apprenticeship program, she’s been able to excel in her craft and grow in her career.

“From the blueprint classes to hands-on experiences, I’ve been able to incorporate those tools in my role as a foreman,” said Olivia. “This opened doors for me to grow into a manager and leader in my craft.”

Olivia also learned how to adapt, mentor and lead in the shipyard. Even in her role as foreman, she’s constantly learning different things about her crew and offering tips to help them perfect their craft.

“Leadership is very important to me because to be a good manager, you have to be a good leader,” said Olivia. “Leading by example and sharing knowledge with the younger generations is the only way to continue building shipbuilders of the future.”

Olivia loves the connection to the work taking shape at Ingalls. For her, it’s just a different way to serve and help protect this country.

“I personally know people who are still serving on our vessels, so that’s my motivation,” said Olivia. “I take great pride in seeing the final product sail away with Navy and Coast Guard members aboard.”
