The June 12-14 campaign offers shipbuilders the opportunity to touch lives by donating blood, registering to be a bone marrow or organ donor, or participating in the American Cancer Society’s Voices of Black Women program.

Every two seconds, there’s someone in need of a blood donor. There is a severe shortage of Type O blood in blood banks, locally and nationwide.

Research shows African-American women die from cancer at a higher rate than any other race. VOICES of Black Women is the American Cancer Society’s new campaign that is centered around improving the health of African-American women.

The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), formerly known as Be the Match, provides blood disease and stem cell matching. Every three minutes, one person is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every 10 minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer.

More than 100,000 people are currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant. Every eight minutes, a person is added to the national transplant waiting list. But it only takes one minute for shipbuilders to help save a life.
