The Harpers Ferry-class dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50), along with Mistral-class amphibious assault command ship FS Tonnerre (L 9024) and La Fayette-class frigate FS Guepratte (F 714) recently led Exercise Chesapeake 2024 with the French Marine Nationale, in the U.S. 2nd Fleet area of operations. This bilateral amphibious exercise between the U.S. and France helps the two nations work together to increase readiness and enhance the understanding of allied capabilities.
LSD 50, which was built at the former Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans, Louisiana and later acquired by Huntington Ingalls Industries, is a landing ship dock that transports and launches amphibious craft, vehicles, crews and embarked personnel in an amphibious assault. It also provides docking and repair services to small ships, acting as the primary command center during these operations.
Commissioned in September 1995, USS Carter Hall is the second ship named in honor of Lt. Col. Nathaniel Burwell’s estate in Millwood, Virginia.
